“No Taxation Without Representation” – Reflections on DC Trip

I’m sure most people remember the saying ‘no taxation without representation’ from studying the American Revolution in US History. Sadly, after my recent trip to Washington, DC, it seems like the saying is once again coming around.

When we elect officials to office, we elect them to represent the will of the people. How can they represent the people when they don’t have communication with those people?
Like many members of the Citizen Patriots group in DC, I had spent time emailing and calling to try and get in touch with my elected officials, but to no end. In fact, the reason we went to DC prior to Jan. 6th was so that we could meet with them in person.

However, upon arriving in DC, I found that I couldn’t even gain access to my senator’s office building because of the risk of COVID exposure. While we were being told this, there was no problem with Speaker Pelosi bringing a COVID positive member of Congress onto the House floor so that she could get enough votes to remain as speaker. Since we couldn’t get into the building, we tried calling their offices again to let them know we were outside. In the end, two of my Congressmen never answered the phone or returned my call. The one that did told me they couldn’t even meet with me outside the office building because of COVID. I never did get the opportunity to speak with any of my representatives. Only one of them even responded to the email I sent and that response came two weeks later, after Congress had voted on the issue.

From what I saw in DC, many of our elected officials don’t seem to care about the people or even worry about what their constituents think of their decisions. COVID has made it only too easy for them to hide from the people. That is why it’s all the more important for you to be emailing and calling your representatives about the issues you care about and not to take no response as an answer. If they do come visit your area of the state, attend in person, and if needed take a trip to DC to meet with them.

Show them that we do care and that we will hold them responsible for what they do while in office.

PART 2 – January 6th, a firsthand account:

By now, many of us are probably tired of the media’s constant coverage and references to the riot of the Capitol. And while it wasn’t wrong for them to cover the event, they skewed the day’s event to fit their narrative. I don’t agree with the actions that some people took that day, but I wanted to take a few minutes to share some of what I saw that the mainstream media would never show or share with you about the event.

1. They’ll never talk about how our group walked down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to the Capital with thousands of others and yet there was not one business looted, burned or vandalized.
2. They’ll never show clips of the thousands, if not millions, of patriots walking by police officers and saying thank you for your service.
3. They’ll never show you video of people at the Capital stopping what they’re doing and clearing a path so that police could carry an injured man out on stretcher. Quite different than the videos I watched all summer of it taking full riot squads of officers just to get to an injured person.
4. They’ll never let you see that no one tried to block the path of responding squad cars, nor did anyone burn or destroy them.
5. And of course they won’t show footage of men putting themselves between the potential danger and the women and children that were in attendance making sure they were safe.

So, what’s my advice for when events like this happen in our nation? Sure, the news will show some truth of what is happening. But I would encourage you to find and talk to people that were there and hear what happened from eyewitnesses. Let’s hear from real people, not just a narrative written by a politically motivated media.

Thanks to Micah Versemann for being part of our team and sharing his perspective.
